Gender Wayang Gamelan Workshop

Tour Overview

Gender Wayang is one of Bali’s traditional gamelan ensembles, primarily used to accompany Balinese shadow puppet performances (wayang kulit). The ensemble consists of four main instruments, played with intricate and precise techniques.

Traditionally, before a shadow puppet performance begins, a sacred ritual is conducted to honor the spiritual and cultural values embedded in the art form. Gender Wayang music plays a vital role in creating dramatic atmosphere and enhancing the characters within the performance.

Today, this traditional music has attracted students and enthusiasts from Europe, Japan, and America who travel to Bali to study and practice Gender Wayang for weeks or even months at a time.

In this workshop, you will learn directly from an experienced instructor about the fundamental techniques of playing Gender Wayang, explore its rhythmic patterns, and experience the beauty of one of Bali’s classical musical traditions firsthand.

For the Balinese community, wayang kulit (shadow puppetry) serves as an important form of informal education rich in moral, spiritual, and social values. This traditional art combines visual art, literature, movement, and sound, presenting stories inspired by classical epics such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Beyond entertainment, it conveys life lessons and cultural guidance for everyday living. Over time, Balinese shadow puppetry has evolved, with artisans and puppeteers creating new characters tailored to specific performances and audiences while preserving its philosophical essence. In this workshop, you will learn directly from a local artist about the process of crafting a traditional shadow puppet made from dried buffalo hide, carefully shaped and painted according to its character. The finished puppet is mounted on a bamboo stick used to animate it during performances. At the end of the session, you will take home your handmade puppet as a meaningful and unique souvenir.
