Balinese Gamelan is a traditional musical ensemble consisting of various instruments such as gongs, kendang (drums), gangsa (metallophones), and ceng-ceng (cymbals). It is known for its dynamic rhythm, fast tempo, and distinctive playing techniques such as kotekan (interlocking patterns), which create an energetic and captivating harmony.
Gamelan is not merely entertainment; it carries strong spiritual and cultural significance. It accompanies religious ceremonies, traditional dances, and artistic performances, making it an essential part of Balinese life and cultural heritage.
In this program, participants will learn the basic techniques of megamel step by step in an enjoyable way. They will be guided on how to properly hold and strike the mallet to produce clear and harmonious sounds, as well as the unique damping technique used after striking the instrument—an essential characteristic of Balinese gamelan performance.
Participants will also understand tempo and rhythm through the integration of different instruments, enabling them to play in harmony as a group. Additionally, they will learn the kotekan technique—interlocking rhythmic patterns between players that create the distinctive and vibrant dynamics of Balinese music.
Through group practice, this workshop not only develops musical skills but also fosters concentration, discipline, teamwork, and unity, as the beauty of Balinese gamelan emerges from collective collaboration.
